Report: Arsenal star Gabriel Magalhaes named in Opta's 2022 PL Team of the Year
The Gunners have had an excellent year. They started 2022 brilliantly but fell short in the race for the top four at the end of last season. This season, however, they’ve been the best team in the country and a number of their players deserve immense praise.
Gabriel is one of them, but we’re sure he’s not the first name on your mind!

Almost every Arsenal player has been magnificent since the start of this season.
Summer signing Gabriel Jesus has arguably been their best player this term, while William Saliba, despite his error against West Ham on Boxing Day, has been right up there as well.
Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli have had fine campaigns too, while Martin Odegaard is their top scorer and has been truly sensational in the number 10 role.
We haven’t even got to Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka yet, who’ve arguably formed the best midfield partnership in the entire Premier League since the start of the season.
According to Opta on BBC, however, none of the above players are good enough to get into their best starting XI of 2022 – only Gabriel Magalhaes is!
The Brazilian, who joined the Gunners from Lille for £23 million (BBC) in 2020, has had a good year. He’s one of the first names on Mikel Arteta’s team sheet, and although he has made a few errors, especially in the first few games of this season, he deserves praise for his performances.
Opta write on BBC: “Gabriel Magalhaes is one of only two players, along with Bukayo Saka, to have started every Premier League game for Arsenal in 2022.
“Indeed, the Brazilian defender has only missed 62 minutes of action in the league all year.
“As a fixture within Mikel Arteta’s expansive Arsenal side, Gabriel has carried the ball further than any other centre-back in the Premier League this year (6,467m).”
Opta’s 2022 Team of the Year: Alisson, Trippier, Thiago Silva, Gabriel Magalhaes, Robertson, Rice, De Bruyne, Rodri, Maddison, Kane, Son
