Arsenal star Ainsley Maitland-Niles is reportedly being targeted by Atletico Madrid ahead of the summer transfer window.
According to the Daily Mail, Atletico are considering a potential move to try sign the 23-year-old on loan and want to reinforce their full-back position, as their player Kieran Trippier will serve a ban for breaching betting regulations.
It is claimed that Maitland-Niles is a “strong candidate” for Spanish outfit Atletico, who are willing to “accelerate” with their interest.
The report states that it’s unclear on if Arsenal would be prepared to grant the player’s exit, but there is frustration with the player right now over his lack of minutes at the Emirates Stadium.
Atletico, who sit top of La Liga and are in the Champions League last-16, are a top side full of class players and have an English representative in Trippier.
Maitland-Niles has earned three senior caps for England, but hasn’t been a regular in the Arsenal XI this season despite starting the two previous Premier League matches.
He’s an extremely versatile individual that can play in both full-back roles or as a midfielder, which perhaps goes against him as he develops into his best position.
Maitland Niles, who earns £35,000-a-week (Spotrac), is a young talent that has the potential to be a top player and Arsenal should reject any approaches for him next month.
With Hector Bellerin extremely inconsistent, Maitland-Niles should be given an extended run in his full-back position and he’s got the quality to help improve that area of the pitch.
The North London club can’t afford to be letting some of their brighter talent leave the Emirates given the fact they are 15th in the Premier League table and he’s one of the few that has delivered for manager Mikel Arteta this season.
