Report: Arsenal show most interest in Sambi Lokonga

Arsenal are the side showing the strongest interest in Sambi Lokonga, according to a report from Le Derniere Heure.

Lokonga has shone for Anderlecht this past season. The 21-year-old made 33 league appearances for Vincent Kompany’s side.

The midfielder recently hinted to Le Derniere Heure that he feels that he is ready to take the step up in his career – and perhaps Arsenal may be the side to offer him a move away this summer.

Le Derniere Heure reports that the Gunners are showing the strongest interest in the youngster.

It is noted that an offer is not expected to be imminent with Lokonga named on Belgium’s standby list for Euro 2020. It comes following his first call-up to the international squad during the previous break.

Arsenal target Lokonga tipped for exciting future by Roberto Martinez

Lokonga has been tipped for some exciting moves during the early stages of his career.

Marca reported in 2019 that he was wanted by the likes of Manchester City and Barcelona.

Interestingly, that report included quotes from Lokonga suggesting that he wanted to stay in Belgium for two more years.

Here we now are, and Arsenal may be ready to test his resolve.

Some Gunners fans may be wary for various reasons. It may be a concern for some that he has not secured that big move by now.

But he seems to remain on the right path.

Roberto Martinez named Lokonga in an interview with World Soccer as he was asked to pick out the younger players to look out for at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup. He hinted that the youngster may have an ‘exceptional’ future ahead.

“We have got young players with exceptional futures,” he told World Soccer. “Yari Verschaeren has already played for the Red Devils. Jeremy Doku is growing really well. Other players are developing quickly because they are playing first-team football. The environment is positive for the likes of Marco Kana, Elias Cobbaut, Sambi Lokonga. Dodi Lukebakio and Sebastiaan Bornauw are talents who are enjoying development abroad in Germany.”

Arteta may be wise to make bid for before Euro 2020

Lokonga is not going to be involved at Euro 2020 as things stand, but his presence on the standby list should tempt Arsenal to make their move soon.

The last thing the Gunners need is for Lokonga to go to the tournament and shine.

Moving now may be more of a gamble, but it may be more beneficial in the long-run.

The levels of interest in him could increase should he feature, and with that, his value may also soar.

It may be a roll of the dice, but it could lead to a masterstroke.
