Report: Arsenal set to sign 21-year-old and then let £100k-a-week player leave soon after
Arsenal signing Nuno Tavares will ‘pave the way’ for Sead Kolasinac to leave the club, the London Evening Standard say.
Arsenal are on the verge of completing a deal which will bring the Benfica full-back to the club.
Arsenal are hoping that Tavares will add competition for them in the left-back slot.
The Portuguese prospect should compete with Kieran Tierney for a place in Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up when he does arrive.
One in, one out
With the announcement of the signing thought to be just days away, Arsenal are now said to be ready to green-light Kolasinac’s departure.
Arsenal let Kolasinac, who is on a £100,000-a-week contract, go on loan last season, but without much cover – and that was a decision which may have been a regretful one.
Kolasinac may not be up to the standard required to start regularly for the Gunners, but he surely would have been a preferable option to Granit Xhaka in the role.
When Tierney was injured towards the end of last season, Arteta opted to use Xhaka in the slot such was his lack of other viable alternatives at left-back, and he never looked comfortable.
Tavares will now give Arsenal two genuine left-backs to pick from, though.
And the sale of Kolasinac should also aid Arsenal, as it will add extra funds to the club’s accounts, which will all be re-invested in new players this summer.
