Report: Arsenal set to be stuck with Ozil

Will Jones

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are struggling to find viable suitors for Mesut Ozil. The Gunners’ plan to offload the German playmaker this summer has so far failed to come to fruition. As such, the 30-year-old is set to stick around at the Emirates Stadium.

Considering Ozil is Arsenal’s top earner, being paid a huge £350,000-a-week according to Spotrac, his ongoing unwanted presence represents a big drain on the club’s resources. Arsenal’s funds are already stretched by their lack of Champions League football, which means Ozil poses a major problem. The funds taken up by the No. 10 massively restrict Arsenal’s ability to invest elsewhere in the market.

What’s more, the ex-Real Madrid man is hardly offering value for money. He was benched for several big games last season. He was also only able to contribute five goals and two assists over the course of the Premier League campaign.

It looks as though Emery must find a way to work with Ozil in his squad for another campaign. Given the German’s vast wages and poor recent form, it’s unsurprising that Arsenal are struggling to find other clubs interested in signing him.

However, if the Spanish coach can finally find a way to coax the best out of Ozil then there could still be a happy ending to this long-running saga. At this stage, though, that looks like a remote possibility.
