Report: Arsenal set sights on 'complete' £34m goal machine, alternative to Gabriel Jesus

Arsenal have a lot of work to do in the summer transfer window.

The Gunners got so close to landing a top-four place, but ultimately had to settle for the Europa League.

Nonetheless, Arsenal were much improved in 2021-22, with most of last summer’s signings doing well.

Now, the Gunners have to not only bring in more quality, but strength in depth too.

In addition, Arsenal have a serious pressing issue in one position – centre-forward.

The Gunners offloaded Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January and didn’t bring in a replacement.

Arsenal’s remaining two senior strikers – Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah – are both out of contract in summer.

While Gabriel Jesus appears to be Arsenal’s top target, there are other centre-forwards reportedly on their radar.

Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb – via Sport Witness – has claimed that the Gunners are eyeing several Serie A players.

They name Lautaro Martinez, Tammy Abraham and Victor Osimhen before commenting on Gianluca Scamacca.

The 23-year-old Italian looks set for a move to a big club after shining for Sassuolo in the 2021-22 campaign.

Scamacca scored an impressive 16 goals in 36 Serie A appearances last term.

It was the third season in a row in which the 6ft 5in ace got into double figures for the Neroverdi.

However, Tuttomercatoweb also claims Scamacca’s future ‘seems to still be in Italy’ amid links with Italy’s top clubs.

“Many clubs interested”

Scamacca signed a new contract at the Serie A club earlier this year.

However, Fabrizio Romano claims this is to protect Sassuolo regarding one of their main assets.

Their plan is still to cash in on Scamacca, suggested the transfer expert.

“Yes, he will leave Sassuolo,” Romano said on Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE in April.

“He extended the contract… but he will leave Sassuolo.

“It was an extension to allow a potential loan with obligation to buy clause.

“So that’s why he extended the contract, and yes, there are many clubs interested in him.

“In January, Borussia Dortmund were asking about him. There are many clubs interested.”

Admittedly, Romano also reckoned that Scamacca might choose to stay in Italy.

But surely the chance of regular first-team football at a leading Premier League club, plus the offer of European football, would be tempting for him?

Scamacca’s reported value prior to penning his new deal was £34 million.

Now he has committed his future to Sassuolo, that valuation will probably be higher.

Scamacca style of play

Former Italy Under-21 coach Luigi Di Biago praised Scamacca in December last year.

“Given that in my opinion Immobile and Belotti are very good, I think Scamacca is very strong,” Di Biagio told La Gazzetta dello Sport, via Forza Italian Football.

“And I’ve been thinking about it for a long time. I believed in him to the point of calling him into the Under-21 very quickly.

“He can become a very high-level centre-forward.”

Di Biagio considered Scamacca to be a complete striker for his ability to dominate in the air and his neat ball control with both feet.

“He has the technique of a (5ft 10in) player and the physicality of a (6ft 5in) player, like him,” he added.

“And then he is complete: right foot, left, head, he attacks from deep, but also plays on the edge for his teammates.”
