Arsenal’s hopes of signing James Maddison in the future appear set to suffer a significant blow, with The Telegraph reporting that the playmaker is close to signing a new contract with Leicester City.
Maddison has been a revelation in the Premier League with the Foxes. He scored seven goals and provided seven assists last season.
And he has scored six times while also providing three assists this time around. Unsurprisingly, his form has seen the 23-year-old attract attention.
The Telegraph reports that both Arsenal and Manchester United are interested in signing Maddison. However, he looks set to disappoint his admirers.
According to The Telegraph, Maddison is closing in on agreeing a new deal at the King Power Stadium. Leicester are reportedly hopeful that talks will reach a conclusion during the mid-season break.
TBR View – No surprise Maddison looks set to snub interest
Of course, Maddison signing a new contract may not deter those interested in signing him.
But it looks to be a significant statement that the youngster is ready to commit his future to Brendan Rodgers’s side.
Leicester are flying high in third place this season. And they find themselves just two points off Manchester City.
Meanwhile, both Arsenal and Manchester United are outside the top six.
The Gunners appear to be showing signs of making progress under Mikel Arteta. The results have perhaps been underwhelming, but some of the performances have been considerably better than they were under Unai Emery.
Interestingly, United are above Arsenal in the table. And yet, it is difficult to work out which direction they are heading in.
Both clubs have the stature to potentially be able to lure Maddison away in the future no matter how many years he is committed to Leicester for.
But right now, it is no surprise that the midfielder is more than happy to stay exactly where he is.
