Reported Arsenal target Joelson Fernandes is now believed to be on the radar of two more big clubs, according to A Bola.
Portuguese publication Record recently claimed that Arsenal are keen to sign the Sporting Lisbon wonderkid.
The Gunners appear to be a potential destination for Joelson due to agent Kia Joorabchian’s good relationship with Premier League clubs.
According to A Bola, however, Barcelona and RB Leipzig have joined the race for the 17-year-old winger.
The outlet also claims that Sporting are looking to tie Joelson down to a new five-year deal.
Joelson’s current contract at the club expires in 2022, and Goal.com claim his release clause is £40million – something the Primeira Liga giants could well be hoping to increase.
Joelson is a highly talented wing wizard who has been tipped to make the step up to the first team over the next 12 months as football returns after the shutdown, and has been compared to fellow Sporting alumni Cristiano Ronaldo (Goal.com).
Prior to current events, Joelson had spent the entirety of the season playing with the club’s Under-23s, where he had contributed five goals and two assists in 28 appearances despite not turning 17 until February.
However, it may prove tricky for Arsenal to make a move for him this summer, as £40million for a 17-year-old with no first-team experience would be a reckless move, given many clubs are expecting huge financial blows in wake of the global health crisis.
Could the Gunners return next year once things have stabilised? Might be too late by then if he’s either signed a new deal with a higher buyout clause or he explodes onto the scene and gets himself into the shop window, cue interest from the richest clubs.
