Report: Arsenal scouting Jonathan David with Liverpool also keen on £30m Lille man
According to The Evening Standard, Arsenal are keeping close tabs on Lille forward Jonathan David, who could be available in the January transfer window.
The Gunners are looking for a new forward in the next few windows. Both Alex Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are facing uncertain futures. The experienced pair are on big money, with Frenchman Lacazette also out of contract this summer.
The Standard claims that Lille star David is another name Arsenal are tracking alongside Everton star, Dominic Calvert-Lewin. David, 21, has already scored 12 times this season and has an impressive 18 international goals in just 24 games for Canada.
Interestingly, reports a few days back claimed that Liverpool were in the mix for David too. Those reports suggested that the Reds had been told to pay £30m for the impressive forward. Certainly, that fee looks quite the bargain given Lille got over £70m out of Arsenal for Nicolas Pepe.
David has developed a reputation in France for being one of the most talented players in the league. Lille, on the whole, have a reputation for producing those sorts of talents themselves.
TBR’s View: Arsenal and Jonathan David are a match made in heaven
Arsenal need a new forward. They need someone who is going to press, work hard, and score goals with the support of the likes of Saka, Smith Rowe, and Odegaard behind.
Jonathan David can definitely be that man. He can play as both a nine and a ten, but crucially, he hits the back of the net on a regular basis. That is what the Gunners need, not someone who is going to take time to adjust and develop.
Of course, David is just 21. There’ll be some adjustment needed for him if he does move. But in terms of pure talent and potential, as well as a bargain at £30m, the Lille man seems a logical signing.
