Arsenal are interested in beating Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea to Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic, according to a report from the Sunday Mirror (29/3; page 77).
It would be little surprise to see Jovic move this summer. The Mirror reports that he cost Los Blancos £55 million. But his time at the Bernabeu has, so far, been a major disappointment.
The 22-year-old has scored two La Liga goals in 15 appearances. It must be noted that the large majority of those appearances have come from the bench.
Nevertheless, there is no question that he has been a poor signing. But that has not put off a cluster of Premier League sides.
The Daily Mirror reports that Arsenal have joined Spurs and Chelsea in the race for Jovic’s signature. It is suggested by the report that the Gunners are keen on taking Jovic on loan.
TBR View – Jovic move an unnecessary gamble if Aubameyang stays
A loan move looks to be a real gamble for Arsenal. The £55 million fee that took to Spain arguably hints that a loan move this summer will still not come cheap.
And the Gunners cannot afford for Jovic to struggle like he has for Madrid, particularly as he will surely only be needed if Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leaves the Emirates.
But he does offer a lot of versatility. He is capable of playing anywhere across the forward line. And his form for Eintracht Frankfurt suggests it may be worth a roll of the dice.
He scored 27 goals across the Bundesliga and Europa League last season.
But his form will need to turn around significantly if he hopes to get anywhere near those kind of numbers next season.
