Report: Arsenal ready to make bid for 'world-class' player, he won the league last season

Arsenal could make a bid for AC Milan star Ismael Bennacer, according to Calcio Mercato Web. The Londoners could also face competition for his signature from capital rivals Chelsea.

The Gunners could hold the aces to winning this race, however. Arsenal previously had Bennacer on their books for two years from 2015 to 2017 but he left in search of regular football.

Arsenal will have to dig deep into their pockets to sign the midfielder. It could take as much as £44 million to bring him to England, with Mikel Arteta clearly looking to bolster his midfield ranks.

Bennacer signed for Empoli when he left Arsenal. He stayed there for two seasons before joining Milan in 2019. The Algeria international has now made 126 appearances for the San Siro giants.

Arsenal are hoping to pick up where they left off when the Premier League resumes. They’re currently sat top of the pile and have a five-point cushion on Manchester City in second.

Bennacer would bring something different to the midfield ranks. Another defence-minded player wouldn’t go amiss and it would certainly help Arteta bolster his strength in depth.

Chelsea boss Potter is also keen to bring some fresh faces to the club in January. His team are down in eighth and they will want to try and make a return to the Champions League next season.

Legendary boss Arrigo Sacchi is a big fan of the midfielder. Back in August, he called the player ‘world-class’ for his performance against Atalanta in Serie A.

Arsenal could make bid for Bennacer

This would certainly be an intriguing deal if Arsenal can get it over the line. Whether it would delight the fan base from a business sense is another matter altogether.

The Gunners allowed Bennacer to leave the club for £1 million after just a single appearance for the North London-based outfit.

To sign him back four years later perhaps doesn’t make sense. However, if Arteta thinks he can do a job, then perhaps he should be backed on this particular deal.

In fairness, his wages at Milan aren’t extortionate. He currently earns £47,000-a-week and that would be reasonably comfortable for Arsenal.

It’s been a strong first half of the season for the Gunners. Whether Bennacer is the man to help them over the line in their title quest, remains to be seen.
