Report: Arsenal open talks to sell 'extraordinary' talent to PL rival

Arsenal have received a boost in their bid to not lose Eddie Nketiah on a free transfer this summer, with The Times reporting that Crystal Palace have opened talks over a move for the striker.

Nketiah currently remains on course to become a free agent at the end of the season. As noted by The Times, he has rejected a new contract at the Emirates.

Mikel Arteta would like for the 22-year-old to stay. However, it would appear that Nketiah is edging closer to sealing a move away.

It was recently reported that Bayer Leverkusen had already made contact over a pre-contract deal. And that may have inspired Palace to act.

The Times reports that talks have begun with the Eagles over a potential move for Nketiah this month. The report suggests Palace had bid £12 million for the striker in the summer. However, Arsenal had wanted £20 million.

Arsenal only right to sell Eddie Nketiah to Crystal Palace if new striker arrives this month

Nketiah blew a fantastic opportunity to impress at the weekend. He led the line as Arsenal were knocked out of the FA Cup. And he missed a golden chance in front of goal during the second-half.

Nevertheless, cashing in would arguably only make sense if Arsenal plan to sign a new striker this month. They do not have the depth to sell him and not find a replacement.

It is hard to see the fee Palace are willing to pay being substantial. So Arsenal will have to weigh up whether it is worthwhile keeping him until the summer.

Paul Merson recently suggested that Nketiah has the potential to ‘be a star’ at Arsenal. Arteta meanwhile, once labelled him an ‘extraordinary’ talent. So selling him to a Premier League rival does come with some risk.

But Gunners fans may not care if selling Nketiah helps pave the way for the club to sign a marquee striker before the deadline passes.
