French outlet Jeunes Footeux has claimed that Arsenal are ‘very close’ to signing Le Havre midfielder Pape Gueye for a bargain £5million, with the Frenchman described as a ‘hybrid between Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante’.

Gueye, 21, is already a regular in Ligue 2 side Le Havre’s senior team – clocking up 37 appearances in all competitions for the second-tier side. He can play at centre-back or in central midfield, and has a contract until the summer of 2021.

The France Under-19 international has now also captained Le Havre despite his tender age, and that has caught the attention of Arsenal who are keen to find some steel in the middle of the park – a Patrick Vieira like midfielder.

AC Milan, Udinese, Fiorentina and Sevilla are also interested in signing Gueye. Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo describe him as a ‘hybrid between Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante’.

TBR’s view – If he is anything like Kante or Pogba, he must be signed

Indeed, it is a glowing review of a player that has less than 40 senior appearances to his name and is only playing at second-tier standard in France. Certainly, the quality if significantly worse than England’s second tier.

But he is still very young, has France youth caps and is already captaining the team at such a young age. Surely he is worth a chance, especially given Arsenal need a steely midfielder to combine with the technically-gifted options they already have.
