Report: Arsenal now set to lose 22-year-old striker for free
Arsenal are set to be rocked by the departure of Eddie Nketiah on a free transfer. The young striker is ready to walk away from the Emirates Stadium for nothing after failing to secure a move in the summer, according to The Sun (Print Edition; 05/09: page, 61).
Nketiah was set for a move to Crystal Palace. A link-up with Patrick Vieira excited the player but the former Arsenal midfielder landed Odsonne Edouard from Celtic instead on transfer deadline day.
Arsenal originally wanted £20 million for the Hale End graduate. As the window drew to a close, however, they were more willing to accept a fee in the region of £12 million.
Clubs still weren’t interested and Nketiah faces a bleak few months. With Arsenal not in Europe, they will have fewer games to rotate the squad and Mikel Arteta clearly doesn’t fancy the 22-year-old.
Nketiah is fancied by a few clubs in Europe. None were willing to pay a transfer fee, however. In January that will change and when he enters the final six months of his Arsenal deal, he can discuss terms with overseas suitors.
The Gunners wanted a sell-on fee or a buy-back option included, which also deterred interested parties. If he moves to an overseas club, he could collect wages in the region of £60,000-a-week and also a substantial signing on fee.
Arsenal have failed Nketiah and they deserve all they get
The talented youngster simply wants to play. There is nothing wrong with that but Arsenal appear to have priced him out of a move away from the Emirates Stadium.
Now, they look set to lose him for nothing and frankly it served Edu right, leaving another blemish on his somewhat average transfer dealings for Arsenal.
Nketiah was clinical at Under-23 level and he’s deserved more of a chance at Arsenal. Although he’s made 65 appearances for the club, a large number of those have come from the bench.
The youngster deserves a fresh start elsewhere and Arsenal will now be forced to watch on as Nketiah begins discussions with overseas clubs in January.
