Report: Arsenal now sending scouts to watch one-time Spurs top target, likened to Emile Smith Rowe

Arsenal are reportedly scouting a player Tottenham Hotspur were linked with earlier this year.

According to The Mirror, the Gunners had scouts watch Rennes ace Lovro Majer in action for Croatia on Thursday.

In November last year, Homme du Match claimed Tottenham had the 24-year-old near the top of their transfer wishlist.

As well as Spurs, the likes of Manchester United and Bayern Munich were apparently eyeing the Croatian playmaker.

But now, it looks as though Arsenal are in the race to sign Majer ahead of the January transfer window.

The Mirror claims the Gunners were watching the playmaker ‘for the second time’ as Croatia beat Denmark in Zagreb.

Majer beat Kasper Schmeichel within a minute of coming on to seal a 2-1 Nations League win for his country.

The midfielder is also said to be on the radar of Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Can Arsenal beat Tottenham to Modric 2.0?

Majer has impressed since joining Rennes from Dinamo Zagreb for £10.8m in the summer of 2021.

To date, he has made 44 appearances for the French outfit, registering seven goals and 11 assists.

Majer has also won nine caps for his country, scoring three times.

One of Croatia’s top talents, he has earned comparisons with the legendary Luka Modric in his homeland.

Majer is aware of such comparisons, previously describing them as “nice” to hear.

While he admits he feels he’s a “long way” from reaching Modric’s levels, he reckons he’s on the “right track”.

The Ligue 1 website has also cited comparisons between Majer and the likes of Arsenal’s own Emile Smith Rowe and Lyon’s Houssem Aouar.
