Report: Arsenal now frontrunners for 'phenomenal' Serie A striker, they like him more than Vlahovic
Arsenal have been linked with a number of strikers in recent months, and it’s no surprise.
The Gunners really could do with bringing in at least one new centre-forward in the summer.
Arsenal offloaded Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January and didn’t bring in a replacement.
The Gunners were seemingly hoping to sign Dusan Vlahovic, but he joined Juventus instead.
Now, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, one striker has captivated Edu just as much as Vlahovic – maybe more.
That player is Victor Osimhen, who has been in sensational form for Napoli this season.
The 23-year-old has registered 16 goals and five assists from 28 Partenopei games in 2021-22.
Osimhen has also scored four goals for Nigeria in World Cup qualifying this term.
Gazzetta – via Sport Witness – claim Arsenal are the ‘number one contender’ to sign the former Lille man this summer.
The Gunners reportedly liked the look of Osimhen even before he went to Italy.
Osimhen apparently ‘intrigues in the same way, if not more, considering the physicality and athleticism they like across the Channel’.
However, ‘given the scale of the investment needed, it will first be necessary to understand whether the Londoners will be able to qualify for the next Champions League’.
If Arsenal finish in the top four, Osimhen should be one of their top targets – TBR View
The next few weeks are arguably some of the most important in Arsenal’s recent history.
After several years in the European wilderness, the Gunners now have the chance to return to the continent’s elite competition.
In addition, the money they’d make from being in the Champions League would enable them to go for much higher-calibre players.
And those same players would be more willing to join a club competing in the Champions League.
If Arsenal can get over the line and finish fourth, then the “phenomenal” Osimhen should be one of the first players they target.
