According to the Express, Arsenal are looking to snap up St Etienne defender, Wesley Fofana, as the Gunners continue to build for the future under Mikel Arteta.
Arsenal have already signed William Saliba from the Ligue 1 outfit. The Gunners paid over £20m to acquire the young defender last summer before allowing him to stay in France for this season.
And now, it appears Mikel Arteta is keen on landing Saliba’s defensive partner in St Etienne, with the Gunners boss eyeing a similar deal for Fofana.
Fofana has impressed this season with 14 appearances under his belt so far. At just 19, the young defender is clearly still learning the game but is also a massive talent.
The current St Etienne manager is former Leicester City boss, Claude Puel. The report claims that although Puel is keen to keep Fofana, there is an acceptance that he will lose some of his best youngsters.
While Saliba cost over £20m, there is, as yet, no mention of a fee for Fofana.
A massive talent praised by former Premier League midfielder – TBR View
These sorts of players are who Arsenal needs to be going for if they are to challenge in the future again.
Saliba and Fofana have formed a formidable duo for St Etienne. Indeed, former Newcastle midfielder, Yohan Cabaye, praised the duo as ‘fantastic’ for the way they are already playing.
Cabaye knows the Premier League well enough to form an opinion on if both Saliba and Fofana can cut it. It appears in the eyes of the Frenchman that they can.
Surely, then, this is positive news for Arsenal fans.
