Spanish newspaper Sport have claimed that Arsenal have made an offer to sign Espanyol midfielder Marc Roca, after considering the Spanish ace before signing Dani Ceballos on loan from Real Madrid last summer.
Roca, 23, has been in excellent form despite Espanyol’s struggles this season. Despite playing in holding midfield, the Espanyol academy product has had a hand in five goals – scoring twice and creating three. He has a contract until the summer of 2022.
A Spain Under-21 international, Roca has now surpassed 100 appearances with Espanyol – but is now ‘close to leaving’ after changing his agents of late. The Gunners are more than aware that the midfielder has a release clause worth £35million.
With Ceballos expected to return to Real Madrid at the end of his loan and the future of Granit Xhaka still somewhat up in the air, Arsenal are keen on signing a central midfielder and it could now be Roca.
TBR’s view – Arsenal desperately need a midfielder Arteta can trust
Before Xhaka’s reaction to jeers from the Arsenal fans against Crystal Palace, the Swiss midfielder was becoming renowned for lapses in concentration at the base of the midfield – making mistake after mistake.
He has improved slightly since, but Arsenal can certainly do a lot better. Matteo Guendouzi has failed to build on his excellent start to life in north London, while Lucas Torreira has fractured his ankle.
This summer, The Gunners need a midfielder that Mikel Arteta can trust to marshall the midfield and defence. Rosa is a top player, but can he managed the expectations from a fanbase such as Arsenal’s? Time will tell.
