Lucas Torreira could be on the move once again in January, with Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb reporting that the Arsenal loanee is set to leave Atletico Madrid when the window opens.

Torreira’s time in the Spanish capital has not exactly gone to plan. The 24-year-old arrived on a season-long loan after falling out of favour at the Emirates under Mikel Arteta.

Unfortunately, he has only made two starts in La Liga for Atleti. In fact, it is almost two months since he played more than 45 minutes in any competition for Diego Simeone’s men.

And it now appears that plans for the midfielder could change.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, the Uruguayan is set to say goodbye to Atletico next month. It is noted that he could leave Arsenal once again, with Torino interested in his situation.

TBR View: Arsenal should hand Torreira another chance if he does return

If Arsenal receive a significant offer for Torreira, it may make sense to let him go. But it seems unlikely that a queue of clubs will be forming with big offers following his spell at Atletico.

For some, his lack of success in Spain may be an ominous sign. But perhaps, it could be argued that Arteta would be wise to give him another chance before writing him off for good.

Torreira – who earns £75,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – is still young. And he was one of the players fans seemed desperate to see more of when the team was struggling last season.

If handled correctly, Arsenal’s poor form may open the door for Arteta to take a few more risks. Some of his focus should now be on building something for next season.

If he can get the best out of Torreira, he could be a brilliant option to have in the ranks.

In truth, it looks unlikely. But perhaps, Torreira returning to Arsenal in January could prove to be a blessing in disguise for the Gunners.
