Arsenal are reportedly interested in a deal for Turkish international left-back Umut Meras, according to reports in Turkey.

According to a report from Hurriyet, the 24-year-old is on the radar of both Arsenal and Newcastle United, with Portuguese club Porto also keen.

It is claimed that Arsenal scouts have watched the defender on numerous terms this season and see him as a left-back open to development.

Arsenal are now expected to make an official offer for the player. Porto are also set to make a move, as a potential replacement for Brazilian star Alex Telles.

Meras, who has seven caps for the Turkish national team, only joined the Ligue 2 side from Bursaspor last summer, following his former boss in Turkey, Paul Le Guen. He was something of a bargain, with Turkish Football News suggesting a fee in the region of €1.3 million (£1.1m). Meras has gone on to impress in his 22 appearances, either as a left-back or left wing-back.

It was reported by The Sun last month that Arsenal are interested in Ajax defender Nicolas Tagliafico as they look to free up Bukayo Saka to play in a wide midfield role.

But the Argentine always seemed like an expensive recruit considering Arsenal already have Kieran Tierney available and a signing like Meras would make far more sense on a financial basis.

It would not be the most exciting move for Arsenal fans but would seemingly be an affordable option to help improve an area where they want to bring in a new face.
