Arsenal are considering joining Manchester United in the race to sign Juventus midfielder Blaise Matuidi, according to The Express.
The Gunners are almost certainly going to be in the market for midfield enforcements during the summer. A previous article from the same publication claimed Mikel Arteta was keen to add ball-playing midfielders to his ranks.
Juventus have recently tied the player down to a new deal. His current contract was set to expire this summer but the Old Lady will now avoid Matuidi walking away for free.
The 31-year-old has bundles of experience under his belt. He played 295 games for PSG and since signing for the Italian giants for £27.8 million in 2017, he has added a further 118 appearances.
Matuidi also has 84 caps for France, helping Les Bleus to World Cup triumph in 2018.
This season the experienced performer has operated in central midfield, although he is also comfortable operating in a more defensive role, protecting the back four.
Arsenal have picked up considerably under the stewardship of Arteta. His team are currently 10 games without defeat in all competitions and sit ninth in the Premier League.
Arriving during a season isn’t easy for a manager, not least as typically you are tasked with reviving a bunch of players who have been underperforming.
Arteta has raised morale, however, and of late the Gunners have been vastly improved.
Next season will be the big one for the Spaniard, however, and as a result, he will be expected to improve on this season.
On current form, Arsenal could land themselves a place in Europe; although they will need to continue their current good run.
Signing a player boasting the experience of Matuidi would certainly help. He boasts strong passing attributes, likes to tackle and would be a massive influence on the club’s younger talents.
