Report: Arsenal identify top managerial target to replace Mikel Arteta, has managed in London before
A report from ITA Sport Press claim that Arsenal are pursuing a move to hire out-of-work gaffer Antonio Conte this summer. Mikel Arteta is already under intense pressure from supporters to get results after an opening-day defeat to Brentford. Conte is out of work, having left Inter Milan.
Conte, 52, surprisingly left his post as Inter manager and was strongly linked with the Tottenham job. While the two held talks, Conte ended up walking away after requesting too much in wages and transfer budget. Nuno Espirito Santo has since replaced Jose Mourinho at Spurs.
Ex-Chelsea and Italy boss Conte remains out of a job, despite just winning the Serie A title. Now, a new report from Italy claims that Arsenal are already preparing a replacement for Arteta in Conte. The report says his £196,000-a-week contract demands would be no problem for the Gunners.
Conte to Arsenal: Could the Italian really replace Arteta?
It would be almost ridiculous for Arsenal to get rid of Arteta after just one Premier League match. Normally, the first departures arise during the October international break. Arsenal will have played seven of their 38 league games by then. It is a tricky run of games.
Arsenal also take on Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham in the next six matches – as well as Norwich, Burnley and Brighton. If Arsenal do not have four wins on the board in their opening seven games, then the pressure will remain and if Conte is still available – a move could be on the cards.
