Arsenal have now held talks over a move for Cody Gakpo as they look to bolster their attack during the summer, according to a report from the Daily Mail.

The Gunners could well be without any senior striker at the start of the window. Both Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are set to be out of contract at the Emirates in the summer.

The Daily Mail reports that Arsenal still hope that they can convince Nketiah to stay. But it is noted that he is looking for assurances over game-time. And thus, the players Arsenal target could influence where the 22-year-old’s future lies.

And it does appear that the Gunners have got the ball rolling. The Daily Mail reports that Arsenal have held talks over a move for Gakpo.

The 22-year-old has been absolutely outstanding in the Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven. He has scored 18 goals and contributed 15 assists in all competitions.

The Daily Mail reports that he could cost up to £40 million.

They will not have a clear run to his signature. Fabrizio Romano has previously suggested that he has been scouted on numerous occasions by Liverpool. The journalist described the forward as ‘really special‘.

Arsenal signing Cody Gakpo may not necessarily mean the end of Nketiah at the Emirates

Gakpo would definitely be an option to play up front for Arsenal. But the large majority of his performances this season have come from the left.

And thus, it is probably not out of the question for Arsenal to sign Gakpo and potentially keep Nketiah. They may not necessarily need to be in competition with each other.

It would undoubtedly be a coup if Arsenal now went on and won the race for Gakpo.

The onus is on Nketiah meanwhile, to show that he is good enough to have a role to play for Arsenal in the years to come.
