Arsenal have made contact over potentially signing Sam Johnstone, with West Ham United having a bid for the goalkeeper rejected, The Athletic say.
Arsenal’s goalkeeper search
Arsenal have been chasing a new goalkeeper for much of the summer so far, with both Andre Onana and Aaron Ramsdale linked.
However, it now appears that Johnstone is on Mikel Arteta’s wishlist to sign.
Arsenal have made enquiries to West Bromwich Albion over how much they would want for their goalkeeper, who was called ‘outstanding’ by Gary Lineker.
West Ham have also tested the water, although their bid fell well short of the Baggies’ valuation.
An opportunity arising?

It means that Arsenal now could have an opportunity to steal a march on the Hammers, if they are to gazump them.
Johnstone could provide strong competition for Bernd Leno at Arsenal next term.
The 28-year-old was one of West Brom’s star performers despite their relegation, and proved that he is capable of playing right at the top level.
It is, however, claimed that Arsenal will only move for Johnstone if they miss out on Ramsdale, who is their top target.
