Report: Arsenal handed boost in quest to sign Ajax star

Premier League outfit Arsenal have been handed a massive boost this afternoon in their quest to sign Andre Onana.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) have reduced the Ajax goalkeeper’s ban from 12 months to nine upon appeal.

Onana was suspended after testing positive for a banned substance in February 2021.

Arsenal have been linked with a move for the 25-year-old. It’s claimed they were awaiting news of this appeal before making their move.

Celtic strike Premier Sports deal - is this the "additional value" we've been waiting for?

Goal claim that Arsenal might have to pay just £7 million to sign the stopper – and that could represent a steal.

It is also thought they were waiting for a decision on this appeal to decide whether or not to press ahead with a deal.

Onana has shone for Ajax, helping them to the Champions League semi-finals during the 2018/19 campaign.

In total he has played 204 times for Ajax, keeping 83 clean sheets and winning 18 caps for Cameroon.

Arsenal are in the market for a new goalkeeper and this could be quite a coup.

Bernd Leno’s future is up in the air, whilst Runar Runarsson looks some way short of being ready for first-team football.

Onana will be able to play from November following the result of his appeal. Arsenal could now go full steam ahead to secure a deal for the international custodian.

Onana could be a real steal for Arsenal

This could prove to be the best piece of business done by the Gunners if they can pull this deal off.

There is a conundrum for Mikel Arteta though.

Onana won’t be able to play until November and that leaves him with a tough decision over Leno.

A good offer would surely tempt the Gunners into a sale, but could leave Arsenal short for the opening stages of the season.

Runarsson looks short of the required quality just yet, so perhaps Leno will be kept around for a little while longer.

Regardless of that, the 25-year-old looks like a step in the right direction for Arsenal.

Onana is one of Europe’s most highly-rated goalkeepers and he could help the Gunners back towards the higher echelons of the Premier League.
