Arsenal released a list of all the players who have been allowed to leave the club today and young Joel Lopez is surprisingly one of them.

The 20-year-old joined the Gunners from Barcelona’s renowned La Masia youth academy in July 2018, and he was always viewed as a star in the making.

In his four years at Arsenal, Lopez played 68 times for the club’s youth sides and caught the eye of many on plenty of occasions.

He was spotted in first-team training regularly as well, and many fans expected him to get an opportunity at senior level at some point. Sadly, that will not happen.

Joel Lopez leaves Arsenal

Arsenal announced today that Alexandre Lacazette, Eddie Nketiah, Jonathan Dinzeyi, Jordan McEneff and Lopez are all on the list of players who will be free-agents at the end of this month.

The Gunners have specified that they have offered Nketiah a new contract and discussions are ongoing. However, the rest have all been asked to leave the club.

That really is a shame, especially with regards to Lopez, who showed so much promise in his early days in Arsenal’s youth academy.

He was a really promising full-back who was a real threat in attack. He was even tipped to be the next Hector Bellerin at Arsenal but things just haven’t worked out for him.

In the mould of Barcelona star Jordi Alba

Back in February last year, The Sun branded him as Jordi Alba 2.0 and even claimed that he’s ‘in the mould’ of the Barcelona defender, who was one of the best left-backs in the world during his prime.

When Lopez joined Arsenal in 2018, it wasn’t because Barca wanted him gone. The Catalans were really keen to keep hold of him, but because they had Miranda, who was two years his senior, they allowed the youngster to join Arsenal for sporting reasons.

Everyone at Arsenal thought they’ve signed a huge talent who would follow the footsteps of Cesc Fabregas and Bellerin at the Emirates.

Sadly, that will not be happening now as Lopez leaves North London in search of a new club.
