Report: Arsenal eye midfielder Wenger tried to lure to the club in 2017

CalcioMercato report that Arsenal want to sign Real Betis midfielder William Carvalho, and could even go after him in the January window.

Carvalho, 29, has been in and out of the Betis side this season – starting just five of his side’s 10 La Liga matches. He has also made three sub outings.

He has entered the final 18 months of his Betis contract, which expires in June 2023. A Euro 2016 winner, he has been linked with English football.

Back in 2017, Portuguese outlet Recordas per The Sun – said Arsene Wenger wanted to sign Carvalho, just a few months after Euro 2016.

But Carvalho, instead, remained at Sporting Lisbon until a training-ground attack from fans. It saw him jump ship to Betis in June 2018.

Now, he has a fringe player at Betis – five appearances shy of reaching a century for the Spanish side. But a move to England is on the cards.

Carvalho to Arsenal: Does Arteta need another midfielder?

The double pivot of Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka is working well – at least it was, until the Swiss star suffered an injury.

But the Gunners do have cover. Albert Lokonga was excellent against Aston Villa – though he was guilty of a mistake against Crystal Palace.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles is another option in the middle, but he has been linked with the exit door. Arsenal could do with a midfielder, perhaps.

But ultimately, does Carvalho get into the side above Xhaka or Partey? Probably not. So, is he happy to warm the Arsenal bench? Time will tell.

How much could he be worth? Marca say he has a release clause in his contract worth an enormous £100million.
