Arsenal are interested in signing Emerson Royal this summer, but Mundo Deportivo notes that the Real Betis defender is in a complicated situation heading into the window.

The Gunners may need to strengthen their right-back options at the end of the season. The Telegraph reports that there are doubts over Hector Bellerin’s long-term future at the Emirates.

And according to Mundo Deportivo, one of the names on their radar is Emerson. The report claims that Betis are aware that the Gunners are keen on the 22-year-old.

Interestingly, Manuel Pellegrini’s side may be powerless to prevent the Brazil international from leaving – and that may not be good news for Arsenal.

Mundo Deportivo notes that Betis and Barcelona both paid €6 million to bring him to Spain from Atletico Mineiro in 2019.

He has played for Betis since then. But the report claims Barca have the option to bring him to the Nou Camp in the summer for €9 million.

It is noted that Betis remain unaware of what the Catalan giants will decide to do. But the report has highlighted Serginho Dest’s form as a potential reason why Ronald Koeman may end up not taking up the option to sign Emerson.

TBR View: Arsenal will surely prioritise other right-back targets

It is potentially a messy situation. And you could understand if Arsenal felt that they were better off out of the running.

Emerson is unlikely to be the only name on Mikel Arteta and Edu’s radar. And if Barcelona are going to take their time, they may be better off looking elsewhere.

In fairness, he has contributed 10 assists in La Liga since the start of last season. So he clearly has a very bright future ahead.

And it cannot be ruled out that Barca may decide to pay the fee to then sell him on. So it may well be a situation to keep a close eye on.
