Report: Arsenal expected to trigger option in 20-year-old’s contract

Arsenal plan to make sure that Tim Akinola remains at the club next season, with Football London reporting that the Gunners are expected to take up the option in his contract.

Akinola looks to be making an impression at London Colney. According to Football London, he has been training regularly with the first-team.

He is awaiting the chance to make his senior debut. But he has been a regular fixture for the under-23s.

The 20-year-old has made 30 appearances for the side, with 26 coming in Premier League 2.

As things stand, his contract at the Emirates is set to expire next summer. But Arsenal have seemingly made a decision on his future.

According to the report, Arsenal are expected to take up the option to extend his terms. Transfermarkt shows that that option would tie him down until 2024.

Akinola is one of the young players who can surely set his sights on a first-team debut at some stage this season.

The Gunners are probably too far in the Carabao Cup for Mikel Arteta to spring too many surprises.

But his chance may come in the FA Cup or as the squad becomes stretched over the Christmas period.

Of course, Granit Xhaka is currently sidelined. Meanwhile, Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny are set to miss several weeks in the new year due to the Africa Cup of Nations.

So Akinola just needs to keep himself in the mix. The plans to extend his contract are certainly a very positive sign.
