Report: Arsenal could sign striker with 'huge potential' for just £13m after his asking price is slashed

Arsenal are among the clubs interested in signing Reims forward Hugo Ekitike when the summer transfer window opens next month.

According to ESPN, Mikel Arteta is one of the managers keen on landing the Frenchman who has been out with a hamstring injury since mid-February.

Arsenal’s need for striking reinforcements is well known by now and they would ideally bring two forwards in during the summer.

Getting into next season’s Champions League would of course help their cause and they are in pole position in that race with Tottenham.

Arsenal could sign Ekitike for £13m

The report reads: “Manchester United have made an enquiry over Reims striker Hugo Ekitike, but Bayern Munich are also in the running for the exciting teenager.

“Sources added that Newcastle, who almost signed Ekitike in January, as well as Arsenal are also keen on the 19-year-old, who has scored nine goals in 22 appearances so far this season, with 14 appearances coming from the start.

Sources said Ekitike would be available for around €15m (£12.7 million) Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has said the club need two strikers in the transfer window as well as needing to target rising stars rather than established names.

Ekitike fits the bill in that regard and sources said an approach has been made to the player’s representatives to find out his plans for next season. Arsenal are also in need of a striker with Mikel Arteta likely to lose Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah on free transfers this summer while Bayern are looking to the future.

Ekitike’s asking price slashed

It was reported in January that Newcastle had agreed a deal worth up to £33 million for the young hitman but the player himself snubbed the move.

It is not quite clear why his asking price has gone down around £20 million since. Perhaps his injury has played a part, but there are also more clubs in the chase now.

It looks like around £13 million would be a bit of a snip for an exciting young forward with plenty of admirers in England and abroad.

And that should give Arsenal the budget to play with to get someone else in especially if they get the money which comes with getting into the Champions League.
