Arsenal might just have a chance of signing Chelsea midfielder Jorginho if the Blues can get their hands on a remaining transfer target this summer.
Frank Lampard’s side have made some of the more eye-catching transfers of the summer and want to add to that with a move for West Ham and England midfielder Declan Rice.
As reported by The Mirror, Chelsea are set to make one last bid to bring Rice back to the club he left as a schoolboy. If they do make a move for Rice they will need to balance the books, with the Hammers star valued at a reported (The Times) £80 million.
That means Jorginho could be sold, with Arsenal waiting in the wings.
It was reported by Sky Sports earlier this week that the Italian international was now on Arsenal’s shortlist regarding central midfield recruits.
The Gunners have been left frustrated by their attempts to sign both Thomas Partey and Houssem Aouar of Atletico Madrid and Lyon respectively, meaning Jorginho has become a potential option.
Jorginho would not be cheap. He only arrived at Stamford Bridge from Napoli in a reported (Independent) £57 million deal in 2018 and is a regular in Lampard’s team.
However, Rice would arrive as his replacement and it appears Chelsea would be ready to let Jorginho leave if they can secure their target.
Arsenal are, clearly, more hopeful of signing Aouar or Partey. Indeed, a report from RMC Sport yesterday suggested Arsenal have now made an initial opening bid of £32 million for the Frenchman.
But if Rice goes to Chelsea, perhaps Jorginho will become an even more likely recruit for Mikel Arteta’s side.
