Report: Arsenal could extend 26-year-old's contract after all, Arteta's a big fan
Arsenal could yet extend Calum Chambers contract as they have an option weighted in their favour, Football London report.
Option in contract
Chambers’ current deal at Arsenal is due to expire at the end of the season.
However, the versatile defender may not leave Arsenal on a free transfer, amid rising concerns that the Gunners were set to fail to receive the market value for another of their players.
That is because the Gunners do have an option to extend his deal for a year.
That could benefit Arsenal as not only does it protect the value of their asset, but Chambers is actually a player who has featured prominently this season.
There was a stage when the 26-year-old’s future in North London looked bleak.
Arteta a fan
But he has fought his way back under Mikel Arteta, who is said to be a big admirer of the Arsenal man.
Arteta apparently likes Chambers’ versatility and his professionalism around London Colney.
Chambers has spent a lot of time on the sidelines at Arsenal, but has never sulked and has continued to fight to earn his way back into the team.
Unfortunately for the Gunners, there remain question marks over whether he has the quality to be a regular starter though.
Chambers isn’t a totally natural right-back, where Arteta tends to play him, and in central defence he faces a huge amount of competition for a place.
