BBC Sport have claimed on their live transfer blog (Thursday, 07:57) that Arsenal are closing in on a move to sign Chelsea defender David Luiz – and may be about to land the Brazilian for a bargain £8million fee.
French newspaper L’Equipe broke the news that Arsenal were in advanced talks for the 32-year-old defender on Wednesday afternoon. Luiz missed Chelsea training in order to force through a controversial move to Arsenal.
Luiz loves a deadline-day move. On August 31, 2016, Luiz returned to Chelsea from Paris Saint-Germain in what was one of the most sensational deadline-day deals to date. Now, this one could eclipse it, given the London rivalry.
It is believed that Arsenal are keen on Luiz, after losing French defender Laurent Koscielny. The former Arsenal skipper left the club after nine years, following his refusal to join the squad on their pre-season tour of the US.
Unai Emery – who sold David Luiz during the first weeks of his tenure at Paris Saint-Germain three years ago – is now desperate to bring in Luiz. The Gunners could do a move for an absolute bargain.
Luiz has two years remaining on his contract at Chelsea, and that means a move requires Arsenal to pay a fee. That fee, as per BBC Sport, is just £8million.
