Report: Arsenal contact agent of 13-assist wizard, news was not what Arteta wanted
Arsenal have contacted the agent of Porto winger Jesus Corona to discuss a move to London, according to ABC Sevilla.
The Gunners are one of a handful of clubs considering bids to sign the 28-year-old during the summer transfer window. He only has 12-months remaining on his contract in Portugal but feels now is the time to try a new experience.
Porto are grateful for everything that Corona has done for the Liga NOS outfit over his six-years at the Estadio do Dragao. And as such, they recognise his desire to forge pastures new in the off-season.
But Porto will hold Corona to a €25m (£21.5m) release clause in his contract until it expires on July 15. The fee is not seen to be out of reach for Premier League clubs keen to add the winger to their ranks in the summer market.
Corona, though, does not want to forge a career in England as he wants to try life in Spain, as he feels it would better suit his style. The Mexican is holding out for a move to Sevilla after they were blocked from reaching a deal in 2019.
The Nervionenses value what Corona could offer in La Liga but are not working on a transfer at present. They are having to hold off reviving their interest while they wait to receive offers for Gunners-linked defender Jules Kounde.
Only once the Frenchman’s future is resolved will Sevilla be able to pursue Corona. The 49-cap Mexican also has interest from Italy and other English sides who have spoken with his agent Matias Burgue.
TBR’s view: Arsenal dealt blow over Corona transfer
Corona has dealt Arsenal a blow in their pursuit of the Porto star by eying Sevilla over north London. Mikel Arteta, then, likely did not hear what he would have wanted after contacting the winger’s agent.
The setback will also disappoint some Gunners supporters. Plenty had reacted positively to the initial reports of their side’s interest. The Daily Mail noted that Arteta viewed the 28-year-old as an option to improve his right-flank.
Corona enjoyed a strong season with Porto last term recording 13 assists and three goals in 48 games. The wing wizard’s efforts also helped Porto reach the Champions League quarter-finals, suggesting he could have helped Arsenal.
