Report: Arsenal consider swoop for free agent who plays like Toni Kroos, he fancies PL move

Arsenal are considering a swoop for midfield free agent Xeka, according to 90Min.

The Gunners enjoyed a fruitful summer transfer window overall, but failed to make any late signings.

Arsenal reportedly tried to sign Douglas Luiz on deadline day, but didn’t succeed in getting a deal over the line.

Now, with Mohamed Elneny out with a thigh injury, the Gunners find themselves short in central midfield.

Thomas Partey has also been out through injury.

However, he is understood to be back in training ahead of a possible return to action against Brentford.

Nonetheless, Arsenal could potentially do with bolstering their ranks in midfield.

The only way they can do so before January is if they go for a free agent.

And according to 90Min, the Gunners are exploring their options in the free agent market.

The outlet claims Xeka is on Arsenal’s radar after he was offered to the Gunners.

Arsenal are reportedly yet to make any firm offers and are instead exploring all the possibilities for their next move.

Other Premier League clubs have also apparently been contacted by the former Lille man’s camp.

In addition, Xeka has reportedly held talks with French side Rennes.

He has apparently delayed a final decision after some positive responses from clubs in the Premier League.

Who is Xeka? Arsenal target profile

Xeka is a midfielder who is currently a free agent after leaving Ligue 1 club Lille at the end of last season.

The 27-year-old spent five years with the French outfit following his arrival from Braga in 2017.

Xeka helped Lille win two trophies – the 2020-21 Ligue 1 title and the 2021 Trophee des Champions.

The Portuguese made 144 appearances for the French club, registering nine goals and seven assists.

Earlier this year, Sofoot spoke about a ‘to-do list’ Xeka ‘had prepared for his 18th birthday’.

This apparently consisted of: ‘Play for the national team, play the Champions League, win a championship and play in the Premier League.’

In terms of his style of play, Xeka told the official Lille website in 2017 that he modelled himself on Toni Kroos.

“When I was little, I only had eyes for Zinedine Zidane,” he said.

“I only saw him on the field. And for me, he is still today the best player of all time.

“But since I became a pro, the one who inspires me the most in my position is Toni Kroos.

“When I watch his matches, I try to analyze his movements, his positioning, the way he touches the ball, how he makes his passes. It’s a model.”
