Report: Arsenal close to Gabriel Magalhaes capture, £27m bid accepted

Arsenal could complete their second summer transfer this week after a £27 million bid for Gabriel Magalhaes was accepted by Lille, according to Le 10 Sport.

Furthermore, reports from The Telegraph have also claimed the central defender is close to penning terms at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal have added Willian to their attacking ranks already this summer but it’s fair to say a new defender would be a welcome addition.

Gabriel, 22, would bolster the defensive ranks nicely with the youngster already boasting a decent level of experience at first-team level.

During 2019/20 he featured 34 times for Lille helping the club to fourth in the league before the season was cancelled.

Napoli and Manchester United are also in the mix for his signature, although these latest reports seem to suggest Arsenal are set to complete the signing.

In total, the defender has made 52 appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit and should complement Arsenal’s squad nicely.

David Luiz and Shkodran Mustafi have occasionally proved erratic, with Sokratis and Rob Holding potentially surplus to requirements under Mikel Arteta.

William Saliba will probably be introduced to the squad next season after arriving from St-Etienne but Gabriel will represent a solid signing nonetheless.

The Brazilian defender finished last season’s Ligue 1 campaign with a pass success ratio of 82.2% (Who Scored) and the youngster is more than comfortable with the ball at his feet.

He averages nearly four headers a game, along with as many clearances from his own box.

Arsenal need a defender who they can count on for consistency and Gabriel might prove to be that player for the Gunners.

For too long, the club has had a soft underbelly when it comes to defending and if this deal can get over the line, they could really kick on next season.
