Arsenal are now reportedly the favourites to sign Ivan Toney in January.

The Gunners have long been said to be admirers of the Brentford striker, and now, it’s said that they’re leading the race to sign the England international.

According to The Independent, Arsenal are ahead of Chelsea and Tottenham in this race, and, furthermore, the Gunners believe this could be a transformative signing.

Indeed, Arsenal are reportedly starting to think that the ‘fantastic‘ striker could be the difference-maker in the title race this season.

However, this deal won’t necessarily be straightforward.

Brentford are now more open to a sale due to how well they have played in Toney’s absence, but there are a few issues that Arsenal need to take into account.

Mikel Arteta is apparently keen to add new signings in four other positions, while the fact that Toney hasn’t played football for half a year now is something that has to be considered.

Of course, as the old saying goes, form is temporary, class is permanent, and we’ve seen players return from these types of bans earlier with relative ease.

Luis Suarez came back from a long-term ban at Barcelona only to hit new heights, while Kieran Trippier has arguably played the best football of his career at Newcastle after being hit with a similar suspension during his time at Atletico Madrid.

Arsenal supposedly think that Toney could be the man to win them the title, and if they do believe that is the case, they need to go all-out to get this one done.

Whether or not Toney could be the difference maker this season remains to be seen, but when you’re so close to doing something so historic, you have to roll the dice and push as hard as you can to win the league, and this may be a gamble worth taking.

This is certainly a situation to keep an eye on as we head into the January window.
