The Daily Record claim that Wolverhampton Wanderers are set to complete the £250,000 signing of Hibernian teen Murray Johnson – with Wolves set to beat Premier League giants Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea in the race for his signature.

Johnson, 16, is ‘on the verge’ of a move to Wolves having already clocked up three caps for Scotland’s Under-16 side – and has broken into the Under-17 team. He has been training with the Hibs first team, under ex-Sunderland boss Jack Ross.

His breakthrough and rise up the pecking order has caught the attention of Premier League clubs. Wolves look set to win the race despite three of England’s biggest sides in Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea all interested in nabbing his signature.

Arsenal allowed Matt Macey to join Hibs in the January window and the presence of the 6ft 6in goalkeeper might have convinced Johnson that he needed to move in order to find a better path into a first team. Wolves seemingly his choice.

TBR’s view – Johnson a low-risk, potentially high-reward signing

It is a move that suits all parties. It is rare these days that Premier League clubs sign a burgeoning talent for a figure of less than £1million. Indeed, it is considerably lower – meaning Wolves are signing a player without taking much of a risk.

If it does not work out, Wolves have not made a considerable loss. For Hibs, that cash is much more important – given the financial challenges Scottish clubs are under at the moment, aside from the Old Firm clubs. For Johnson, he joins a big club.

One that are established in the Premier League. A good move for all involved.
