Italian website CalcioMercato claim Arsenal and Liverpool are battling three other European clubs in the race to sign Wolfsburg playmaker Josip Brekalo this summer, but face huge competition from Atletico Madrid, Roma and Milan.
Brekalo, 22, has done well this season but it is looking more and more likely that he will leave Wolfsburg this summer. The 22-time Croatia international enjoyed an excellent season last term, having a hand in 14 goals.
Scoring seven and creating seven, Brekalo has struggled to replicate that this season with just four apiece in 31 outings. However, that has not stopped some big European clubs from taking a look at him ahead of the summer.
Gianluca Di Marzio claimed last summer that Wolfsburg were looking for a fee of £17.5million for the winger, who can also play in the 10 role. A fee easily afforded by the five European club interested in his signature.
Bundesliga’s official website have compared Wolfsburg’s number seven to that of Mario Gotze.
TBR’s view – Which team needs Brekalo most?
Both clubs could do with an addition on the flanks this summer. Arsenal have Gabriel Martinelli, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Nicolas Pepe, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard – but the latter is likely to return to Real Madrid.
Martinelli and Aubameyang are both strikers, Saka will eventually merge into the 10 role and Pepe remains inconsistent. Liverpool, meanwhile, are likely to sell the players that act as cover to Mo Salah and Sadio Mane.
They need a player that is happy to act as cover to those two, with Xherdan Shaqiri likely to be off. Brekalo would surely be willing to act as back-up at Anfield – especially if they qualify for the Champions League. Both need him.
