Arsenal and Everton are amongst the Premier League teams interested in signing Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard this summer, according to a report from the Daily Mirror.
Edouard has proved to be an inspired signing for the Hoops. The 22-year-old has scored 46 league goals in 81 appearances for the club, while he has also found the back of the net 11 times in Europe.
There have 28 strikes in all competitions this season. And that has seemingly prompted a number of English sides to run the rule over the Frenchman ahead of the next transfer window.
The Daily Mirror reports that Arsenal, Everton and Leicester City have all been looking at the £30 million-rated forward.
As noted by the Mirror, the Gunners are having to consider life after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The striker is out of contract at the Emirates next summer and is yet to pen fresh terms in North London.
Edouard would have massive shoes to fill therefore, if he did make the switch to Arsenal. But his ability to step up when Celtic face their toughest games hints that he could be a revelation in the Premier League should he make a move.
‘I find myself applauding’
Arsenal fans unsure about Edouard should certainly take some encouragement from comments Brendan Rodgers once made about the youngster.
Rodgers, of course, was Celtic manager when Edouard arrived at Parkhead. And, while Edouard had to bide his time initially due to Moussa Dembele, it was Rodgers who helped the former Paris Saint-Germain man live up to the expectations of being Celtic’s club-record signing at £10 million (via The Scottish Sun).
And back in December 2018, Rodgers shared – in comments reported by The Scottish Sun – just how impressed he often was with Edouard’s ability.
“Odsonne’s a game-changer. No question. He’s a wonderful player,” he said. “For us to get him for the money we did was a snip, really.
“I just want to work with good players, and when we first saw Edouard, then brought him in on loan from PSG, you could tell straight away.
“Some of the things he does every day I find myself applauding due to the sheer quality he possesses, it’s incredible. Odsonne also has a great footballing brain and technique for such a young player.”
Given his age, those comments should certainly excite Arsenal fans. What has been so remarkable about Edouard’s form in Scotland is he is rarely bullied by the centre-backs he comes up against.
And as Rodgers notes, he always has a piece of magic up his sleeve.
Aubameyang may leave a massive void at Arsenal in the near future. But Edouard could be an incredibly exciting replacement.
