Arsenal and Everton look set to miss out on Steven Nzonzi, with Ouest France reporting that the midfielder is set to see out the season with Rennes.
Nzonzi seems to be one player who simply has to be linked with a move away in every transfer window. And this month has been no different – even with the former Stoke man already out on loan.
Foot Mercato reported earlier in the month that Nzonzi was set to discuss terminating his contract with Roma. It was claimed that Rennes were planning to offer the World Cup winner a permanent deal having initially brought him in during the previous January window.
However, Nzonzi was apparently set to take time to consider his options. According to Foot Mercato, Arsenal and Everton were both monitoring his situation.
Ouest France has also suggested that the Gunners and Toffees are admirers of the 32-year-old. However, they have reported that his representatives have confirmed that he will remain at Rennes for the rest of the season.
TBR View: Nzonzi future set to become talking point once again this summer
Nzonzi has been excellent in Ligue 1 this season. So the news may divide some Everton and Arsenal fans.
Some Gunners supporters had no interest in seeing the midfielder arrive when the recent links emerged. However, there were others who liked the idea, especially on a free.
In fairness, neither Arsenal or Everton appear to urgently need a player like Nzonzi. Of course, on a free transfer, a deal could have still proved inspired. But it appears that any hopes have now been dashed.
And unfortunately for those tired of seeing their side linked with Nzonzi, the fact that the report only addresses what his future will hold up until the summer makes it seem highly possible that the speculation may only die down temporarily.
