Report: Arsenal and Everton jostling for £30m-plus defender Djene Dakonam

Djene plays for Getafe.

Two Premier League clubs want Getafe defender Djene Dakonam. According to Marca, Everton and Arsenal are both keen on a summer swoop for Djene.

Getafe value Djene at €35m (around £31m) because they do not want to lose their star man. But this might not put Everton and Arsenal off their pursuit.

Djene plays at centre-back and could be brought in to bolster either side’s defence. The 34-cap Togo international has been with Getafe since 2017, racking up 74 appearances.

Last season, Djene played 34 times in the league, helping his side to an impressive fifth-place finish in La Liga. But he could leave this summer.

Arsenal manager Unai Emery desperately wants a new central defender this summer. His current options have underperformed or suffered with injury problems.

Djene could arrive to compete with Laurent Koscielny, Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis and Rob Holding for the starting centre-back spots.

But Arsenal face a battle with Everton for the 27-year-old. Marco Silva wants to bring in a new centre-half to push Everton into contention for Europe next season.

Michael Keane and Kurt Zouma formed Silva’s first-choice centre-back partnership last season with Yerry Mina and Phil Jagielka in reserve.

But Zouma’s loan spell has ended and Chelsea’s transfer ban could damage Everton’s hopes of re-signing him. Meanwhile, Jagielka has been released.

Arsenal can offer Djene European football, unlike Everton. This could be an advantage with Djene also set to play in Europe if he stays at Getafe.
