Arsenal and Everton were both unsuccessful with official bids for Lille defender Gabriel Magalhães in January.
According to Le10 Sport, the Premier League outfits tried and failed to land the Brazilian last month with both sending several offers towards the end of the window.
Lille stood firm over the ace, who has since signed a new contract that ties him down to the Ligue 1 club until 2023 according to the report.
Gabriel has caught the eye for Lille since joining in 2017 from Brazilian club Avaí.
He has been a regular in the starting XI this term after two previously unsuccessful loan spells with Troyes and Dinamo Zagreb.
In the end, Everton were unable to add an alternative centre-half to their squad during the winter window but Mikel Arteta was able to land Pablo Mari on loan from Flamengo, with an option-to-buy (BBC Sport).
TBR’s view – Colossus Gabriel would have improved Everton
Arsenal were able to add cover and therefore won’t be too stung by missing out on Gabriel, who is well known by current Gunner Nicolas Pepe.
Everton, however, couldn’t get anyone else in and may come to regret not landing the South American.
Carlo Ancelotti only has Michael Keane, Mason Holgate and Yerry Mina at his disposal, and sometimes all three can be on the pitch at the same time.
The Toffees are really struggling to keep clean sheets this term – they’ve managed just six all season and none in their last 12 away league matches.
It feels as though a new presence is needed at the back and Gabriel might have provided it.
