Arsenal and Chelsea have made contract offers to the agent of AC Milan playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu, according to Sky Sports Italia.
The Turkey international is out of contract in the summer and isn’t impressed with the offer of an extended contract at the San Siro.
Calhanoglu has been offered £83,000-a-week to continue with the Serie A outfit; with the player wanting £105,000-a-week to take his yearly salary to £5 million.
Signing him won’t be easy for the Premier League duo, however. The report claims that Juventus are ahead of both Arsenal and Chelsea in the race.
It is also thought that Juventus would offer a higher salary but the lure of a new country might prove decisive.
Calhanoglu has been at Milan since 2017 when he checked in from Bayer Leverkusen. He has played 163 times for the club, scoring 30 goals and claiming 47 assists.
During 2020/21 he has grown as a player, registering 11 assists with Milan firmly in the title race.
Both Arsenal and Chelsea suffered humiliating defeats at the weekend. The Gunners went down 3-0 to Liverpool, whilst the Blues were humbled 5-2 by struggling West Brom.
TBR View: Arsenal must beat Chelsea to Calhanoglu signature
Chelsea could have the lure of Champions League football to offer any potential targets in the summer, whereas Arsenal won’t.
As a result, signing a player of Calhanoglu’s quality could prove a coup for the Gunners.
Mikel Arteta will go in search of new players and a creative option or two certainly wouldn’t go amiss.
Arsenal might not even have the Europa League to fall back on next season and that could make recruitment tricky.
Calhanoglu would be a decent step in the right direction though and Arteta would be wise to steal a march on Chelsea and Juventus if possible.
