Sky Sports claim that Arsenal have added Chelsea midfielder Jorginho to their summer shortlist as they struggle to bring Thomas Partey to the club from Atletico Madrid – while Lucas Torreira is closing in on an exit.
Jorginho, 28, has established himself as a crucial member of the Chelsea side over the past two seasons, since his £50million (BBC) move to Stamford Bridge from Napoli. The Blues beat Manchester City to his signature, where Mikel Arteta was assistant.
The Italy international clocked up his 100th Chelsea outing in all competitions earlier this season, in which he has scored 10 goals – becoming renowned for his unique style of penalty-taking. He has captained Chelsea twice this term.
Arsenal are interested in Jorginho as Arteta looks to sign a midfielder. Partey remains an option, while Lyon star Houssem Aouar is also on the Gunners’ shortlist. Jorginho, though, has a contract at Chelsea until 2023 – worth £110,000 a week (Spotrac).
TBR’s view – Jorginho would take Arsenal into the top four
He is exactly what Arsenal lack. A bit of tenacity, a bit of aggression but also a bit of Champions League quality in midfield. Jorginho is one of the best in the world at what he does – so much so he ushered N’Golo Kante out of the holding midfield role.
Whether Arsenal can get him or not, remains to be seen. He is likely to cost a lot more than the fee Chelsea paid for him two years ago, and to step down to a side in the Europa League from the Champions League is a big ask for Jorginho.
But if Arsenal can get him, they would be pulling off an enormous coup.
