Report: Tottenham-linked Champions League winner still faces uncertain future
Chelsea defender, Antonio Rudiger, could still leave the Blues this summer, amid continued interest from the likes of Tottenham and others.
As reported on TBR at the end of March, Spurs had maintained their interest in Rudiger. The German defender was wanted by Jose Mourinho in January, and even came close to signing.
Rudiger, of course, went on to win the Champions League with Chelsea after enjoying a remarkable turnaround under Thomas Tuchel.
However, The Athletic now claim that while Rudiger is still happy in West London, he is still open to a move away. The defender is said to be seeking a lengthy contract with what he apparently sees as his last big deal.
Rudiger arrived at Stamford Bridge for just shy of £30m. He is said to earn around £100k-a-week with the club, but that places him well outside the top earners.
Tottenham are set to appoint Daniel Fonseca as their new manager. It remains to be seen, then, if the club would reaffirm their interest in Rudiger once he takes over.
28-year-old Rudiger has won 40 caps for Germany. He is set to represent his country this summer, having been named in the Euro 2020 final squad.
Tottenham back in for Rudiger? A lot will depend on Chelsea, and the new boss
If Spurs want to sign a defender who knows the Premier League and knows how to win, Rudiger is the man. He’s into the final 12 months of his deal, so any transfer fee would surely be reduced.
As the Athletic state, there is no big push from Rudiger to leave. But, with Spurs having such a long-term interest, it makes sense for Daniel Levy to keep in the loop here.
Rudiger would be an outstanding signing. A player of international quality who can immediately improve the first XI, is just what Spurs need.
