Report: Antonio Conte personally trying to bring 'world-class' defender to Spurs, wants him to replace Sanchez
A report by Italian outlet CMW have outlined the Spurs boss’ plans for the winter window as he continues his squad overhaul.
Conte has not yet committed his future to Tottenham but the report says the club are ready to back him in the transfer market regardless.
They say that de Vrij is of particular interest because his contract is running out at the end of the season.
Conte wants to replace Sanchez with De Vrij
That means that Spurs will offer 4-5 million euros (£3.5-£4.4 million) to try and sign him in January, to test whether Inter would rather risk losing him for nothing.
And Inter will look to negotiate a lower salary than the £3.5 million the Dutchman earns right now, while Spurs would offer a pay rise.
That is how they managed to get Ivan Perisic on a free transfer during the summer, and de Vrij is another player Conte has already worked with before.
The report says Conte has made contact with the defender personally to try and get him to come to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
And if they get their man, Spurs would fund the move by getting rid of Sanchez, potentially on loan with an option to buy for a fee in the region of £15 million.
De Vrij, who Conte has previously said can be ‘world-class’, would be an upgrade in a backline which still does not look strong enough to take Spurs where they need to go.
