Report: Antonio Conte has just tried out Djed Spence in totally new position for Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur have now played two behind-closed-doors friendlies as they prepare for domestic action to restart.

Antonio Conte will want his players to be in the best shape possible, although he’s still missing a few keys stars.

Those players that are already in training faced Peterborough United yesterday, as relayed by Football London.

Conte’s side ran out 3-1 winners against a young Peterborough side, with a number of fringe players getting some minutes.

Bryan Gil and Harvey White were both on the score sheet, having barely featured in competitive action.

Gil now looks set to leave the club on loan in January, and White would be wise to do the same thing.

Matt Doherty scored Tottenham’s third goal, and will be hoping to jump ahead of Emerson Royal in the pecking order.

Conte has struggled to choose between his right wing-backs, and barely considered new signing Djed Spence.

Spence arrived for £20m from Middlesbrough in the summer after a fantastic campaign with Nottingham Forest.

He’s only played four league minutes, but might have found another way to break into the Tottenham side.

Football London report that Spence played in a new position for the second-half against Peterborough yesterday.

It could be the key to finally seeing more of the 22-year-old in action.

Spence played in a new position yesterday

Journalist Alasdair Gold wrote that, “Spence spent the first half as the right wing-back and then for the second half switched with Doherty to take a role on the left.

“He was involved in playing Bryan Gil through down that flank on an overlap run before the Spaniard picked out the Irishman to score.”

It isn’t a surprise to see Spence having an impact in attacking areas.

He formed a fantastic partnership with Brennan Johnson last season and caused Championship defences plenty of problems.

Opportunities have been hard to come by for Spence with two more senior players above him in the pecking order.

There are reports that Emerson Royal could move on from Spurs soon.

However, there’s an equal number of stories suggesting Conte is eyeing up replacements like Denzel Dumfries and Pedro Porro.

If Spence wants to establish himself in his new left wing-back position, he still has a lot of competition.

Ivan Perisic and Ryan Sessegnon won’t want to give up their spots in the side easily.

However, Spence displaying his versatility is no bad thing going forward.
