TeamTalk have claimed that Swansea City manager Graham Potter has told Dan James that he wants the winger to follow him to Brighton, despite recent links with Leeds United and Manchester United.
James, 21, came within a whisker of joining Leeds in the January window for £8.5million. Despite passing a medical, Swansea ignored phone calls from Leeds and a move failed to materialise on deadline day.
Now, the Wales international has come to the fore with some excellent recent performances. A debut goal for Wales and a hand in 15 league goals for Swansea has seen Premier League clubs come calling.
Last week, Sky Sports claimed Manchester United were edging towards a deal to sign the youngster. But since then, other reports have suggested that a deal is very far from being done.
Now, TeamTalk claim Potter is on the verge of replacing Chris Hughton at Brighton in a deal worth £3million in compensation. It is believed that Potter – who gave James his chance – has asked the winger to follow him.
James has the world at his feet, and the choice of plenty of England’s biggest clubs. A move to the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool would be tantalising, but it could have a detrimental effect on his career.
Game time would be difficult to come by at either side. At 21, James needs regular senior football in order to reach the next level. But at United, he would struggle to get that – something which Wilfried Zaha found out.
At Brighton – or indeed Leeds – James would be given the chance to shine on a regular basis and a move to a lesser club will have a much more positive impact on his future.
