The Daily Echo have claimed that Everton have made an increased second offer to sign Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as the Toffees look to nab the Danish ace from under the nose of Tottenham.
Hojbjerg, 24, has reiterated his desire to leave Southampton this season after entering the final 12 months of his contract. He has been stripped of the Saints captaincy after making it clear to his current side he wants to leave.
Everton made an £18million offer for the former Bayern Munich star last week, but in a bid to tempt Southampton into selling him to the Merseyside club over Tottenham – they have upped that bid to £20million.
Spurs will be desperate to sign Hojbjerg as Jose Mourinho looks to add some steel in the middle of the park – something Tanguy Ndombele was supposed to do after being brought in as Mousa Dembele’s replacement.
TBR’s view – What is Hojbjerg worth?
Still very young at just 24 years of age, Hojbjerg already has more than 200 appearances to his name at club level and 33 caps for his country. The powerful midfielder is experienced in the Premier League.
He is just what both Everton and Tottenham need. But what would he be worth, in a normal transfer window – not affected by the global health crisis, and if he was not in the final year of his contract?
He was initially being rated at £35million and that kind of fee makes sense for a player that has had such an important part to play at Southampton of late. Even if the bidding reaches that figure, he is still value for money.
